Man arrested after five-hour rooftop stand-off with police in Hetton-le-Hole

A man has been arrested after a five hour rooftop stand-off with police in Sunderland.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Tuesday afternoon after reports of an intruder at an empty address in Hetton-le-Hole.

When police arrived, it is alleged that a suspect climbed on the roof of the property in Caroline Street to avoid arrest and had thrown objects at officers.

After first arriving on scene to negotiate with the man shortly before 5.30pm, police left the scene just after 10.30pm.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police confirmed that the man had been taken in police custody.

He said: "We can confirm the man on the roof in Hetton has come down and has now been arrested by officers for a number of outstanding offences.

"He remains in police custody at this time."

One witness at the scene said: "It’s been going on since half five, it hasn’t calmed down at all.

"You can hear stuff being thrown down from the roof.

“Police with riot gear have been here the whole time but it’s a stalemate.”
