Man arrested after eight-year-old boy died in M60 crash released on bail

A man who was arrested after an eight-year-old boy died in a crash on the M60 has been released on bail.

Emergency services were called to junction 23, for Audenshaw, after a silver BMW collided with a highways maintenance vehicle on the clockwise carriageway of the motorway.

Two boys, aged six and eight, travelling in the BMW were taken to hospital.

The eight-year-old boy was pronounced dead a short time later.

The six-year-old boy has since been released from hospital.

A woman travelling in the highways maintenance vehicle received minor injuries.

A section of the motorway was shut while emergency services attended the scene (ASP)

The driver of the BMW, a man in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, drug driving and driving without insurance.

He has since been bailed pending further enquiries.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the collision which took place at around 2pm on Friday, February 28.

Sergeant Matthew Picton, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We continue to investigate the circumstances of this dreadful incident, in which a young boy very sadly lost his life.

“We are pleased that the other child’s injuries were not as serious as first thought and he has been released from hospital.

“Our thoughts remain with those affected by this terrible incident.

“We continue to appeal for information following the collision and we’d ask that anyone with information get in touch with our officers.”
