Man arrested after dramatic police chase through busy road

A man was arrested following a dramatic police chase through Birkenhead .

Police began pursuing a male at about 3.30pm from Argyle Street, a spokesman for the force said, before he was arrested on Kingsland Road about five minutes later.

Witness Peter Griffiths said a huge police presence was involved in the chase.

He told the ECHO: "We were coming home from town when we heard sirens while we were about to cross over at Charing Cross.

"When we looked down to Whestone Lane and Borough Road we saw three marked cars [and] then when we got to Borough Road, another two of the big Range Rover type police cars went past us, followed by a yellow van."

Mr Griffiths claimed all police vehicles had "sirens and blue lights going."

He added: "Then about five minutes later the police helicopter was overhead."

A spokesman for Merseyside Police confirmed officers were assisted by a helicopter in the chase, which ended on Kingsland Road.

After the "short pursuit" the spokesman confirmed a male was arrested.
