Man arrested after cyclist is killed in hit and run near Wakefield

A man has been arrested after a cyclist was killed in a hit and run near Wakefield.

A Ford Fiesta collided with a cyclist at around 6.40am on Saturday, December 21 at a roundabout on Doncaster Road, in South Elmsall.

The driver sped off and the man who was riding the bike was pronounced dead at the scene.

West Yorkshire Police has launched an investigation into the fatal hit and run, and arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink driving.

He remains in custody.

Sergeant Carl Quinn, of the Major Collision and Enquiry Team, said: “We are continuing to investigate what has clearly been a very serious incident and road closures are expected to be in place for some time.

“I would urge drivers to bear with us and avoid the area while we conduct necessary enquiries there.

“I would ask anyone who we have not already spoken with who saw the collision or who has dashcam footage of it to contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team on 101 referencing police log 0459 of 21 12 2019.”
