Man arrested after climbing over Buckingham Palace security fence

A 22-year-old man has been arrested after climbing over a security fence at Buckingham Palace.

The man from Croydon, south London was seen on CCTV attempting to enter the Palace and arrested by officers within a “security perimeter” at around 4:15am on Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police said.

Police said the man had been drinking and was not armed. He did not gain access to the palace.

No Taser was deployed by officers during his arrest and the incident is not thought to be terrorism-related.

It is understood that no members of the Royal Family were in residence at the palace at the time. The Queen is currently at Balmoral in Scotland.

Scotland Yard said the man is currently in custody at a police station in central London.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson has declined to comment.

Several intruders have breached the security at the Queen’s London residence over the years

In May, a 41-year-old convicted murderer was sentenced to four months in prison after scaling the Palaces’ perimeter fence and spending 10 minutes “admiring” the gardens while the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were in residence.

After being detained, he asked "is Ma'am in?" repeatedly, prosecutor Tom Nicholson told Westminster Magistrates' Court.

In 2013, a full-scale security review was launched at the Palace after a man was arrested in a state room after scaling a fence and breaking in.

Royal officials insisted there would never be another security breach following the case of Michael Fagan in 1982, who walked into the Queen’s bedroom as she slept.
