Man arrested after car hits pedestrians in UK's Derby, several injured —what we know so far

A man has been arrested after a car hit multiple pedestrians in UKs Derby city centre on Saturday evening, police said. Several people were injured, some seriously, and were treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital.

The incident took place on Friar Gate at around 9.30 pm and involved a black Suzuki Swift. Derbyshire Constabulary said officers quickly stopped a vehicle believed to be involved and arrested the driver, a man in his 30s, who is now in custody.

Police said they did not believe there was any ongoing risk to the public but urged people to stay away from the area while investigations continue. Friar Gate has been closed from the junction with Curzon Street and Cheapside up to Ford Street.

“Although we know this will be alarming, we would like to reassure people that we do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the public,” police said, adding that more updates will follow. Officers are also asking anyone who saw a black Suzuki Swift in Derby around the time of the incident to come forward.

Local MP Catherine Atkinson said she was deeply shocked by reports of injuries in what she called a serious incident. “My thoughts are with those injured and I’m grateful to our emergency services,” she said, urging people to follow police advice and share any information with authorities.
