Man arrested after being brought to safety from Millennium Bridge

Emergency services were called to the Newcastle Quayside after concern for a man who was found on the Millennium Bridge.

Police officers began a search for the man at 6am on Good Friday and he was found at around 8am on the bridge over the River Tyne.

Four fire engines were called to the scene at 8.10am to support police but the firefighters then left after around 20 minutes.

A number of police cars and a police van were also seen at the bridge shortly before the emergency services stood down.

Northumbria Police said the man was arrested after he was found.

A spokesperson for the force said: "At about 6am today, police received a report of concern for a male on the Millennium Bridge.

"Emergency services attended and the man was brought to safety."
