Man arrested after baseball bat-wielding thugs attack house before ramming Mercedes into it

Detectives have arrested a man after a gang of thugs attacked a house before 'repeatedly' ramming a Mercedes into it.

The vehicle was left embedded in the front of the home in Manchester Road, Bury, following the 'shocking' incident at about 12.40am on Monday.

Residents said they saw a number of men carrying baseball bats smash the house's windows before reversing a 'black car' into a Mercedes parked on the drive.

The impact caused the Mercedes to smash through the front of the property, causing extensive damage.

Two cars were recovered from the scene.

Crime scene investigators remained at the house until Monday lunchtime.

A 22-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.

He remains in custody for questioning.

Following the incident, residents living nearby said they had been left ‘scared, shocked, and confused'.

“Two or three boys came out in black hoodies and white masks,” said Uzma Raja, who lives nearby.

“The boys had baseball bats.

“They smashed the windows, 20 or 30 times. They were screaming and shouting.”

However, Ms Raja said the incident is the first of its kind she has witnessed in her three years living in Bury.

The 38-year-old added: “It is quite nice [here]. This has never happened, it’s the first time.

“I am a little bit worried. The kids are worried.”

Another woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said the incident had left the community ‘shocked’.

Detective Inspector Alison Witkiewicz of Greater Manchester Police's Bury district, said: "Thankfully no one was injured as a result of this disturbance but it could have resulted in a far worse outcome.

"Since the report we've been following multiple lines of enquiry and have since arrested one male in connection with the incident. Although we've made an arrest our enquiries will continue and I would encourage anyone with information, or footage, to get in touch with us as a matter of urgency."

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 8133, quoting incident number 105 of 04/10/2021.
