Man arrested after 'attacking people with a stick on Market Street' and threatening horrified shoppers

A teenager has been arrested after reports of a man attacking people with a stick on Market Street in Manchester city centre.

Police were called at around 4.30pm on Friday, following reports that the man was assaulting passers-by with the stick in the middle of the busy city centre.

Witnesses reported seeing a man swinging the stick at another man before threatening others, in front of horrified shoppers.

Officers – one plain clothed officer and one uniformed officer – quickly attended and detained an 18-year-old man, before arresting him on suspicion of affray.

One witness told the Manchester Evening News the man was swinging the weapon towards another man 'quite viciously'.
