Man arrested after allegedly writing 'rat' on condolence book for Garda Colm Horkan

A man has been arrested after allegedly writing 'rat' on a book of condolences for Detective Garda Colm Horkan on Friday afternoon.

Officers were disgusted after the slur was allegedly written.

The suspect was arrested for alleged criminal damage by gardai in Blanchardstown in Dublin.

He has since been charged.

The alleged incident comes as books of condolences have been opened in stations all over the country for the hero detective who was shot dead in Roscommon on Wednesday night.

Last night it was announced that President Michael D Higgins will hold a memorial for the late detective.

Gardai around the country held a minute's silence at 12pm around the country as a state funeral took place in St James' Church in Charlestown, Co Mayo.

A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana told The Irish Daily Mirror: "Gardaí in Blanchardstown have arrested and charged a man (23 years) in relation to an incident of criminal damage that occurred at Blanchardstown Garda Station on Friday afternoon, 19th June, 2020.

"The man was in Blanchardstown Garda Station and proceeded to cause criminal damage to the Book of Condolences for the late Detective Garda Colm Horkan.

"The man was arrested this morning, Sunday 21st June, 2020.

"He has since been charged and is due to appear before Blanchardstown District Court on Monday morning, 22nd June, 2020 at 10.30a.m."
