Man arrested after allegedly injuring security guard with edged weapon at Darwin's Karama Shopping Plaza

A security guard has been injured after being attacked with an edged weapon at a shopping centre in suburban Darwin.

NT Police said the guard was assaulted by another man at the Karama Shopping Plaza about 1:30pm on Friday, and received "multiple lacerations" during the incident as he and colleagues apprehended the man.

The 18-year-old alleged offender was arrested soon after.

He was transported to Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) with minor injuries, where he remains under police guard.

Police said they expected to charge him with serious harm offences later today.

The security guard also received treatment at RDH, travelling to the hospital after performing first aid on himself.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Day described the assault as "particularly violent".

"It is quite frankly incredible the victim wasn't more seriously injured," he said.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police.
