Man arrested after alleged vandalism on Adelaide's Mall's Balls

Cleaners removed the graffiti from the iconic metal sculpture.

A man who allegedly defaced Adelaide's famous Mall's Balls with graffiti before vandalising other nearby shopfronts has been arrested.

Police said security cameras showed a man scrawling red spray-paint on the Rundle Mall landmark about 12:20am on Sunday.

He was spotted walking onto Gawler Place and then down Grenfell Street, spraying graffiti on several shop windows, police said.

The vandalism was condemned by Adelaide City Council, and prompted police to appeal to the public to help catch the man responsible.

A 23-year-old rom Clovelly Park has been arrested and charged with eight counts of property damage.

"People who commit these sort of offences are not artists but vandals," Superintendent Craig Wall said in a statement.

"This sort of vandalism and damage causes not only an unsightly image for the CBD and building owners but costs the community a great deal of time and money to clean up."

The man will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on December 5.

It is not the first time the Mall's Balls, officially entitled Spheres, have generated headlines this year.

In June, authorities condemned the actions of a man who leapt on top of the Mall's Balls from a nearby canopy.
