Man arrested after 80-year-old suffers multiple fractures in 'unprovoked' attack

A man has been arrested after an 80-year-old man and his son were assaulted as they walked for a taxi.

The elderly victim suffered multiple fractures and facial injuries following the incident outside Natwest, on Packer Street, Rochdale, on Saturday night (February 5).

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that a 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

Police are also hunting for a second suspect believed to be involved in the unprovoked attack.

A GMP spokesman said: "A man has been arrested after an 80-year-old man and his son were assaulted in Rochdale

"The victims were attacked shortly after 10pm on Saturday 5 February 2022 outside the NatWest Bank on Packer Street and the elderly gentleman sustained multiple fractures and facial injuries.

"A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and is being questioned in custody but officers are still looking for a second suspect believed to have been involved in the attack."

Detective Constable Melanie Jeffery, of Rochdale CID, added: "This appears to have been an unprovoked attack on an elderly gentleman and his son who were walking for a taxi.

"CCTV of the incident have been obtained but there may also have been a number of witnesses to the incident in the vicinity and we ask for them to come forward."
