Man armed with shotgun dies after being shot in leg by police on Sydney's northern beaches

A man has died after being shot in the leg by police on Sydney's northern beaches.

About 9:30pm, NSW Police were called to a house in Ingleside after reports of a domestic violence incident.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Julie Boon said three officers went to a granny flat attached to the Mona Vale Road property after reports a man had strangled his mother.

On arrival, they were confronted by a 53-year-old man with a loaded shotgun, she said.

"Upon entering the granny flat, the man was armed with a firearm and police fired one round into the man's leg," she said.

The man, Jacob Carr, was given first aid and treated on the scene by paramedics before being transported to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.

He died a short time later.

A critical incident has been launched and it is understood the officers were wearing body cameras, which are now being reviewed.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Boon said the firearm was unregistered and the weapon was pointed at police officers, but would not comment further about the moments leading up to the shooting.

She family members of the 53-year-old man were the ones who made the call to police.

While the shooting unfolded, an engagement party was occurring in the house on the Ingleside property and police were appealing for witnesses.

The Acting Assistant Commissioner said they were "very concerned" about the three officers involved and they would be providing them support over the next few months.

A crime scene was established and a critical incident investigation team from the NSW Police's homicide squad will examine the shooting.
