A MAN has been arrested following the alleged stabbing of two police officers at Toronto.
A NSW Police spokesperson said officers were called just after 1pm on Sunday to a service station at the intersection of the Boulevarde and Cary Street, following reports a man was armed with knives.
Lake Macquarie Police District officers attended and were confronted by the man, who police said was armed with two knives.
"A number of shots were discharged by police; however, the man was uninjured, and two officers suffered stab wounds - one to leg and the other to the hand," the spokesperson said.
"Both have been taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition and will undergo surgery."
The man, 25, was arrested and taken to Toronto Police Station.
Multiple crime scenes have been established.
The Boulevarde and Cary Street remain closed as inquiries continue.
NSW Ambulance duty operations manager Inspector Mark Gardiner said paramedics had a "tough job" looking after the injured men.
"When you head out to a job like this you never know what you are actually turning up to," Inspector Gardiner said.
"Paramedics had a tough job looking after these men.
"There was a lot of blood - but they worked hard to ensure the best outcome by managing the bleeding.
"There is always a huge concern when paramedics treat people for stab wounds because you can never really tell how much damage has actually been done."
The incident sparked a fiery response from the Police Association of NSW, who called for anyone who attacks their members to face "the maximum weight of the law".
"For our part at the Police Association our overriding priority and first response is always to action immediate steps to support and provide welfare assistance to our members and their families, as was done today," acting president Kevin Morton said.
"No reminder should be needed, but the events of today and the last week have shown the reality of the dangers of policing when officers are being targetted with lethal weapons."

TWO men have been stabbed at a service station at Toronto.
A NSW Police spokesperson said an operation was underway in the suburb "after a man armed with knives was arrested by police at a service station".
A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said two crews were called to the scene just before 1pm on Sunday and paramedics found two men who had been stabbed.
"Both men were treated at the scene - one of the men received a stab wound to the hand - he is expected to undergo surgery at John Hunter Hospital," the NSW Ambulance spokesperson said.
"The second man was stabbed in the thigh and buttocks, he was also transported to John Hunter Hospital
"Both men remain in a stable condition."
