Man 'armed with gun outside shopping centre' sparks major police chase through Manchester

A man has been arrested on suspicion of firearms and driving offences after a dramatic police chase in north Manchester this morning.

Officers were called at around 9.36am today (SUN) to reports of a man sitting in a car at The Fort shopping centre in Cheetham Hill armed with a gun.

Police responded and ended up pursuing a vehicle north towards Newton Heath.

The car was brought to a stop on Ten Acres Lane and a suspect then fled on foot before being detained on Ivy Graham Close.

A 40-year-old man was arrested and remains in custody for questioning.

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: "At around 9.36am this morning (Sunday 19 September) police were called to The Fort shopping centre in Cheetham Hill, following a report received that a man was sitting in a vehicle in the car park in possession of a firearm.

"Officers attended and pursued the vehicle before bringing it to a stop on Ten Acres Lane, Manchester. The suspect then fled the vehicle before being detained near to Ivy Graham Close in Newton Heath.

"A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of firearms and driving offences. He remains in custody for questioning.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
