A man reportedly armed with a knife and hammer has been arrested outside the Home Office.

The suspect, in his 30s, was taken into custody on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and “making threats to kill”.

Police were called to the scene outside a Home Office building on St Thomas Street, south London on Tuesday afternoon, following reports of a man armed with a knife and a hammer.

Scotland Yard said passing officers were flagged down and arrested a man at around 12.45pm.

"The man was taken into custody, where he remains," police said.

The incident is not being treated as terror-related.

It comes after a 29-year-old man was charged with grievous bodily harm over a knife attack outside the Home Office last week.

Dominic Hornberger, from Birmingham, was charged with possession of a knife in a public place following the stabbing of a civil service worker on Thursday.

He is due to appear in Southwark Crown Court next month after appearing at Westminster Magistrates' court on Saturday.

A government employee in his 60s was pictured holding a dressing to his face after being slashed in the attack on Marsham Street, Westminster.

The victim was led away by paramedics before being taken to a major trauma centre. The Met said the injuries sustained by the man were neither life-threatening or life-changing.

Hornberger, who was remanded in custody, will next appear in court on Friday September 13.
