A man has appeared in court charged with the murders of two people at a sheltered housing unit in Ilford, Essex.

The pair, named as John Down and Karen Reid, were discovered by staff last weekend. Their alleged killer, Paul Mallin, 50, appeared at Barkingside magistrates court on Monday charged with their murder.

Mallin allegedly stabbed to death Down, who was in his 80s, and Reid, in her 50s, on Saturday night.

The murders took place in Fernways housing unit, a group of 50 self-contained apartments that houses mainly elderly people.

Mallin appeared in the dock on Monday accompanied by two officers. He was remanded in custody until the next hearing at the Old Bailey on Wednesday.
