Man appears in court on murder charge over stabbing

Glen Smith, 35, died from stab wounds at Bolton Point on Sunday night,

A man wiped away tears as he faced Newcastle Local Court today charged over the fatal stabbing of another man near Newcastle in New South Wales.

Paul Russell Newburn, 32, was arrested in a fast food restaurant on Monday night and charged with the murder of 35-year-old Glen Smith.

Mr Smith collapsed from stab wounds in a suburban street at Bolton Point on Sunday night.

He was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

The court heard Newburn failed to appear in another court yesterday on unrelated charges, including goods in custody and possessing a knife.

He was convicted in his absence and today sentenced to a total of eight months prison for the offences, along with failing to appear in court and breaching a bond.

Newburn did not apply for bail in relation to the murder charge and it was formally refused.

The case will return to court in March.
