Man appears in court on murder charge in connection with the death of a man in alleged shooting in Ardrossan

A man has appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court in connection with the death of a 42-year-old man at a house in Ardrossan on Sunday afternoon.

Paul Cairns was found gravely injured and later died after the alleged shooting incident.

James Ferguson is charged with murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

Emergency services which had rushed to the scene could not save Mr Cairns.

Police were called to the address at Nithsdale Road in the Ayrshire town shortly before 5pm.

A 42-year-old man was later arrested following the incident.

Chief Inspector Brian Shaw said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Paul Cairns at this very difficult time, and they ask to be left alone to come to terms with what has happened.”

A spokesperson from Ayrshire Police Division said: “With reference to the death of Paul Cairns, 42, at a house in Nithsdale Road, Ardrossan, on Sunday, May 24.

“A 42-year-old man has now been charged in connection with the death.”

Today Ferguson, 42, appeared in court in connection with Mr Cairns’ death.

Ferguson, from Kilwinning, is charged with murder, and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

He made no plea or declaration, was committted for further examination, and remanded in custody.

He is expected to appear in court again at a later date.
