Man appears in court charged with stabbing his parents in their home

A man appeared in court today charged with stabbing his parents at their home.

Conor Dreelan, 25, appeared at Dublin District Court following his arrest on Saturday morning.

He is accused with producing a kitchen knife as a weapon and assault causing harm to David Dignam and Phyllis Dreelan in the Darndale area of the city.

The couple, who are in the 40s and 50s, were taken to Beaumont Hospital. Mr Dignam is critically ill while Mrs Dreelan is understood to be in a serious but non-life threatening condition.

Det Garda Michael McCabe told the court father of one Dreelan was taken to Coolock Garda station. He was sent to hospital after “he was examined and it was deemed he needed medical treatment for a hand injury”.

The accused was interviewed twice on Saturday for about five and a half hours. Det Garda McCabe told Judge Colin Daly he made no reply when charged.

A file is being prepared for the DPP and there was a possibility of “additional charges”, the court heard.

The detective applied to have the accused’s surname amended on the charge sheet from Conor Dignam to Conor Dreelan.

Dressed in a T-shirt and jeans, the forklift driver did not address the court.

There was no application for bail and Judge Daly remanded him in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on June 23. Legal aid was granted.
