Man appears in court charged with murder of dad to be Noel Whelan

A man has been charged with the murder of dad to be Noel Whelan following a horror stabbing this weekend.

Mark Whelan, 45, of Castlecurragh Heath, Mulhuddart, Dublin was arrested in the wake of the incident and was brought before Blanchardstown District Court today.

He is not related to the victim.

Noel Whelan, who was in his 20s, was stabbed to death on March 30 last at a house in Castlecurragh Heath, Mulhuddart, Dublin.

The accused has been charged with the murder of Noel.

Garda Sergeant Shane McCarthan gave evidence of arrest charge and caution.

He said that the accused was charged in Finglas Garda Station at 1.15pm.

He made no reply to the charge when he was cautioned by the garda.

Whelan was dressed in a green top and navy blue tracksuit trousers, he had noticeable cuts and scrapes to the top of his head.

Det Sgt McCarthan made an application for the accused to be renamed in custody until April 5 to appear at Clover Hill District Court.

Judge Murphy granted the application and also granted a further request for legal aid.

Defence solicitor Tracey Horan requested: “I would request that my client get immediate medical assistance and psychiatric treatment and assessment while in prison.”
