Man appears in court charged with knife murder in Co Clare on St Patrick's night last year

A man appeared in court yesterday charged with a stab murder on St Patrick’s night last year.

Nathan O’Neill, 20, is accused of killing Jamie Higgins in Shannon, Co Clare.

Family members of the victim were in Ennis District Court for the hearing.

The father of one died as a result of an alleged fatal stabbing incident at around 2am on March 18 last year at the Shannon Knights nightclub.

O’Neill, of Hill Top Drive, Dooradoyle, Limerick, is also charged with assault causing harm and assault causing serious harm of Michael Shannon, on the same date at the same location.

Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Det Sgt Kevin O’Hagan of Shannon Garda Station said at 10am yesterday, he arrested O’Neill at Shannon Garda Station concerning the murder charge and the two assault charges.

The witness said the accused made no reply to any of the charges. Judge Patrick Durcan granted legal aid to solicitor Turlough Herbert.

He said he wished to apply for bail for his client on the two assault charges on a procedural basis so those charges along with the murder charge could be dealt with as a package.

Judge Durcan refused bail on the two assault charges and said he could not deal with bail on the murder charge as that will be dealt with by another court.

He remanded O’Neill in custody and he will re-appear via video link today.
