Man appears in court charged with drug dealing after latest Encrochat investigation

A man from Salford has appeared in court accused of dealing Class A and Class B drugs after a national investigation into encrypted messages.

Anthony Wilson, of Lentworth Drive, Worsley, has been charged with conspiracy to supply cocaine, heroin and cannabis by Mersyside Police.

The 41-year-old was held in custody to appear at Wirral Magistrates Court this morning, August 27.

Officers say they arrested Wilson as part of the force's actions in Operation Venetic - a national investigation into Encrochat, an encrypted messaging service which has allowed criminals to communicate in secret.

Led by the National Crime Agency, Venetic has seen law enforcement agencies across the UK join together in order to break through the 'highly sophisticated' encrypted global communication service, which was being used by organised crime groups.

At one point, around 10,000 people in the UK were believed to be using EncroChat on devices which usually cost between £1,300 and £1,500 for six months of use.

Anyone with information about drug dealing in their area is urged to contact Greater Manchester Police online, using 101, or by calling the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
