A 53-year-old man has appeared in court over the death of a woman on the Isle of Man.

On Good Friday evening an “altercation” took place outside Palace Hotel on the island, according to police.

Jillian Hughes, from Merseyside, later died at Noble’s hospital.

John Meadows, who is also from Merseyside, appeared at Douglas courthouse on Monday charged with her manslaughter.

The court heard they had been visiting the island with their family.

The high bailiff, James Brooks, said due to the seriousness of the charge, the case could not be heard by the lower court and would be committed to the court of general gaol on 28 May.

Detectives are appealing for information from the public in relation to the incident.

Supt Stephen Maddocks, who is leading the investigation, said on Sunday a number of witnesses had come forward, and thanked the public for their help.

Maddocks said he wanted to hear from anyone who saw the pair as they made their way around the town with another man and woman in their 20s, who had a small child with them. He urged anyone who had not come forward to do so.

“The patrons inside the restaurant may well have witnessed an altercation between them,” he added.

“Again, I appeal to any vehicle driver, either a member of the public or a taxi driver travelling along Central and Queen’s Promenade between 9pm and 10pm who may have dashcam footage to come forward.”

Meadows was remanded in custody and will next appear in court on 9 April.
