Man and woman plunge to their deaths from Ibiza hotel balcony in 'murder-suicide'

The deaths of two tourists who plunged from a hotel balcony in Ibiza are being treated as a potential murder-suicide, reports say.

Detectives are investigating whether a man pushed his partner to her death from the fourth floor before leaping over himself.

Police rushed to the scene at the four-star Torre del Mar Hotel at around 4:30am on Thursday.

Paramedics were also called to the hotel - located in Playa d'en Bossa, a favourite British resort - but could do nothing to save the lives.

Local media has identified the dead pair as a Moroccan man, 26, and a Spanish woman with dual Italian citizenship, 22.

Neither of the deceased - who are said to have dropped more than 15 metres - has been named so far.

Reports said the couple, who were sharing the same room, had been heard arguing before they plunged to their deaths.

Spanish National Police have launched a probe which is being coordinated by an island court.

The investigation began at daybreak when officers began inspecting the balcony and knocking on doors in the hotel for statements.

Several bottles were discovered on a table on the balcony, it was said.

Reports have suggested that the deaths could be a case of gender-based violence, although officials are yet to comment.

According to the UN, gender-based violence refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender.

Local outlet Periodico de Ibiza reported that preliminary autopsy results "confirm" the working theory.

Playa d'en Bossa, on the southern tip of the island, is described online as Ibiza's "premier party destination".
