Man and woman killed in collision on A688 after car left the road and veered into a field

Police are appealing for witnesses after two people died in a collision in County Durham.

A man and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene following the crash on the A688 bypass between Coxhoe and Bowburn roundabout at around 1.30am on Sunday morning.

Officers say the vehicle involved left the road and came to a stop in a nearby field.

An investigation into the circumstances is now under way.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "A grey BMW had been travelling north from Bowburn Services, across the motorway interchange and up the A688 towards the A181, where it left the road and came to a stop in an adjacent field.

"The male and female occupant of the BMW were sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"Their families have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

"An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is now underway.

"Anybody with dashcam footage of the BMW prior to the collision, or with information relating to the incident, is asked to contact Durham Police on 101, quoting incident number 121 of September 5."
