Man and woman killed following early morning crash in Drumcondra

Two people have tragically died following an early morning crash on a busy north Dublin commuter route.

A man in his 60s and a woman in her 30s were killed after their cars collided on Drumcondra Road Lower near the junction of Hollybank Road at around 6:30am this morning.

They were both the sole occupants of the vehicles.

Gardai are currently carrying out a technical examination of the scene.

A garda spokesman said: "A technical and forensic examination of the scene is currently underway. Drumcondra Road Lower will remain closed in both directions for a number of hours and diversions remain in place.

"Further updates will be available on Garda Twitter.

"The deceased male and female have been removed to the Dublin City Mortuary, Whitehall where a post mortem examination will take place."

The road is a major commuter route and the incident has caused the diversion of several bus services.

Dublin Bus have diverted routes 1,11,13,16,33,41 and 44.

In a statement, they said: “We wish to advise customers that due to a road traffic accident Drumcondra Road has been closed from the junction of Botanic Ave to Whitworth Rd. All routes to the city have been diverted via Griffith Ave, Mobhi Rd, Whitworth Rd, and back to normal route at Dorset Street.

“All routes from the City will divert via Whitworth Rd, Mobhi Rd and back on normal route at Griffith Ave.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

HGVs heading outbound are being diverted along Clonliffe Road towards Ballybough.

The road is one of the main routes to Dublin Airport and those travelling to the airport are advised to take alternative routes.

Gardai are appealing to motorists with dashcams or anyone travelling on Drumcondra Rd Lower between 6:15am and 6:45am to contact Mountjoy Garda Station on 016668600 , the Garda Confidential Line 1800-666-111 or any Garda station.
