Man and woman in hospital after BMW being chased by police smashes into car

A man and a woman are in hospital after a BMW being chased by police smashed into another car in Tameside.

Officers began to pursue the BMW 3 Series, in the Openshaw area, at around 1.15am this morning.

A short time later the car collided with a BMW X2 on Manchester Road, in Audenshaw.

Police arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He remains in police custody for questioning.

A 38-year-old woman, who was in the BMW X2, and a 19-year-old man, who was travelling in the 3 Series, were taken to hospital.

Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

A section of the A635 Manchester Road is closed in both directions between Audenshaw Road and Lord Sheldon Way.

Lord Sheldon Way is also closed between Moss Way and Manchester Road, with traffic on diversion.

Greater Manchester Police have said the road is expected to remain closed until after Wednesday morning rush hour.

Traffic is already queuing in the area.

A statement released by GMP said: "At around 1.15am on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, police engaged in a short pursuit after a vehicle failed to stop for officers in Openshaw.

"A short time later, the BMW 3 Series collided with a BMW X2 on Manchester Road.

"A 38-year-old woman from the X2 and a 19-year-old man from the 3 Series were taken to hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

"A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody for questioning.

"The A635 is currently closed between Audenshaw Road and Lord Sheldon way and is expected to remain that way until after this morning’s rush hour.

"The incident has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct by GMP’s Professional Standards Branch, in line with normal procedure."
