A man and woman have been charged over their alleged involvement in an aggravated break and enter at Beresfield in the early hours of Monday morning.
Police allege that the pair, both aged 23, forced their way into a house on Beresfield Road around 1.50am where the occupants - a man, woman and their eight-year-old child - were sleeping.
The occupants woke to the sound of items in the house being knocked over, Police said, but no one was injured.
A short time later, police attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended and located the man and woman walking down Beresfield Road.
They were taken to Maitland Police Station where they were charged with aggravated break and enter in company.
They were bail refused and were expected to appear before Maitland Local Court on Monday.
