Man and woman arrested over Balmain supermarket stabbing

The attack happened outside the Woolworths in Balmain.

A man and woman have been taken into custody following the stabbing of a 16-year-old boy in Sydney's inner west.

The assault happened around 6:40pm on Thursday outside the Woolworths in Balmain, when the teenager, his younger brother and a friend were confronted by a man with a knife who asked for a cigarette lighter.

The man then stabbed the teenager in the stomach and hand, police said, before the attacker and a woman were seen fleeing along Palmer Street.

Paramedics treated the teenager at the scene before taking him to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

About 4.30pm Saturday police arrested a 29-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman at an address on Foy Street, Balmain.

The man has been taken to Newtown Police Area Command and the female has been taken to Day Street Police Station where inquiries continue.
