A man and a woman have been detained on suspicion of terror offences related to Syria, according to police.

A West Midlands Police statement said the pair were arrested in Dover, in Kent, on Saturday.

The arrests were not linked to the London Bridge terror attack last month.

They have been taken to a police station in the midlands for questioning.

The force said: “A 32-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman were arrested in Dover.

“The man was arrested on suspicion of preparing to commit terrorism offences and funding/supporting terrorism.

“The woman was arrested on suspicion of preparing to commit terrorism offences.

“The arrests were carried out by West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit detectives and the two are being questioned at a police station in the West Midlands."

Giving further detail on the nature of the arrests, the force said: “The arrests were intelligence-led; there was no risk to the public.

“The arrests are not linked in any way to the London Bridge terror attack and enquiries into this matter were underway prior to the incident on 29 November.”
