Man and woman arrested after reports of a 'gun shot' in Easington Lane

Two people have been arrested after a member of the public reported hearing a gun shot.

Police were called at around 2.15pm on Tuesday after someone heard a loud bang on a construction site near South Hetton Road in Easington Lane, Sunderland.

The caller reported that they believed the sound was that of a gun being shot.

Armed police were deployed to the scene and identified an address where they believed the noise may have come from.

A man and a woman have been arrested and a small cordon is in place at the address as police carry out a search.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "The incident attracted a large crowd and officers would like to reassure the community that nobody has been injured and there is no wider risk to the public.

"Officers will remain on patrol in the area and anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak to those officers.

"Anyone with information about the incident is also encouraged to contact police on 101 quoting log 620 16/07/19 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
