Man and woman arrested after child dies in Darlington

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a child who was found in a critical condition inside a house in Darlington. 

The unnamed man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing serious injury to a child and has been further arrested for murder.

A woman in her 40s has also been arrested as part of the investigation, Durham Police has said. 

Emergency services responded after the child was found in a critical condition in a home in Frosterley Drive, Darlington, County Durham, at around 9am on Friday.

Despite the best efforts of ambulance crews and the Great North Air Ambulance, the child died from their injuries on Friday afternoon.

A Durham Police statement added: “Sadly, the child passed away. 

“A man in his 30s has also been arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing serious injury to a child, and has been further arrested for murder.

"A woman in her 40s has been arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing serious injury to a child.

"Both remain in police custody while further inquiries are carried out."

Durham Police has been contacted for further information. 

The Great North Air Ambulance was additionally called out on Friday in Darlington to attend an incident at a school to provide “drug therapy” to a patient at around 2.45pm. 

The charity added in a statement: “The team landed in a nearby school, and once with the patient administered drug therapy to stabilise the patient before making a journey to hospital by road.”
