Man and woman appear in court over disappearance of Newcastle schoolgirl

A man and woman have appeared in court charged with the abduction of a schoolgirl.

The pair pleaded guilty to the abduction of the teenager when they appeared in the dock at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court on Friday.

The child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was reported missing from Newcastle earlier this month.

Magistrates heard CCTV was used to track the girl's steps and she was seen leaving a property in the city and getting into a car nearby.

Northumbria Police carried out enquiries and the girl was found safe and well at a property in the Gateshead area a number of days later safe and well, the court was told.

Defence agent Mark Richardson, who was representing the woman, said his client was "very remorseful" about what had happened.

He added the girl "insisted they take her away" and that "no physical or mental harm" came to her.

As the woman wept in the dock, he said: "I ask you to be lenient."

Peter Docherty, who represented the man, said his client cooperated with police and admitted to playing a part in the abduction.

Mr Docherty added: "He apologised for any inconvenience caused and didn't realise it would case so much tension."

Magistrates released the pair on a six month conditional discharge and fined them each £71.
