Man and three children taken to hospital after M4 crash closed part of the motorway

A man and three children were taken to hospital after an accident that shut the M4 for an hour.

The westbound carriageway of the motorway was closed for an hour near Newport as emergency services worked at the scene.

Police said they were called to the scene of the two-vehicle crash between junction 26 High Cross and junction 27 Tredegar Park around 12.20pm on Tuesday.

A spokeswoman said: " A silver Peugeot had collided with a truck, leaving it stranded in the middle lane. All three westbound lanes were temporarily closed."

The injured man and children, who were in the Peugeot, were taken to hospital by ambulance but their injuries are not thought to be serious.

The Welsh Ambulance Trust said that several ambulance crews were sent to the scene.

The road was fully re-opened at 2pm but congestion remains in the area.

Motorists were directed off the motorway for a time and surrounding roads in the Newport were heavily congested.
