Man and child found dead in remote Far North Queensland town

A crime scene has been declared at the property on River Road in Rossville.

Detectives in Far North Queensland are investigating the deaths of a young boy and a man at a town south of Cooktown.

The pair — aged four and 46 — were found dead when police attended a property on River Road at Rossville just before 10:00am on Friday.

Officers said the pair were known to each other.

A crime scene has been declared with specialist police and detectives on scene.

Detective Inspector Jason Smith said police were trying to work out the relationship between the boy and man, and what had happened.

"We're examining a property and talking to detectives," Inspector Smith said on Friday afternoon.

Officers from Cooktown Police are guarding the scene with extra officers being sent from Cairns.

'Everybody knows everybody'

The publican of Rossville's Lion's Den Hotel, Darryl Paradise, said hearing of the deaths had been a big shock to the community.

"We don't expect to see this sort of thing happening in the neighbourhood," he said.

"We heard about it at lunch time today — we're all totally shocked and just find it hard to believe."

"It is a very small community, everybody knows everybody and everybody speaks to everybody."

Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said the incident was tragic.

"We're the biggest shire in Queensland and we're only a small population base," Cr Scott said.

"We're like a larger extended family up here and it's a jolt when anything like this happens.

"That said, the occurrence is pretty rare."

Investigations are still underway.

Rossville is located on the edge of Black Mountain (Kalkajaka) National Park and recorded a population of 204 people in the 2016 census.
