Man allegedly used hammer in robbery at Hamilton

A MAN accused of using a hammer to rob another man at Hamilton on Friday has been refused bail.

Shane Carl Daly, 36, did not appear in Newcastle Local Court on Monday after he was charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon.

He did not enter a plea or apply for bail and the matter was adjourned until January.

Mr Daly was arrested at a unit in Maitland Road at Mayfield after allegedly threatening a man, 58, with a hammer in Cameron Street, Hamilton about 3.40pm on Friday.

Police allege the man was standing outside a home when Mr Daly approached, pushed him up against a wall and demanded cash.

He allegedly took the man's mobile phone and fled to a nearby vehicle.

Newcastle City police were called and launched an investigation, arresting Mr Daly later that afternoon.
