Man claims self-defence after allegedly trying to run down pedestrians in Adelaide

A man who allegedly crashed his car into a pedestrian, and tried to run over several other people in Adelaide's south last night, has been charged with four counts of acts to endanger life.

Emergency services were called to Glynville Drive at Hackham West just before 10:00pm, after reports of a disturbance.

The Holden sedan driver had allegedly tried to run over several people following an argument, before crashing into the front of a dance studio.

He then reversed into another man who was standing on the footpath, who suffered leg injuries and was taken to hospital.

The driver, Christopher William Mason, 46, was also charged with assault causing serious harm and property damage.

He appeared in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court this afternoon and was remanded in custody to face court again next week.

A report was ordered to determine if he was suitable for home detention bail.

The court was told Mr Mason had been acting in self-defence and was trying to drive away after being set upon by the victims.

Witness Rucita Stephens said she felt vibrations from the crash from her home across the road and looked out to see the incident unfolding.

"We were sitting up watching telly and came out and this [car] was just hooning up and down the street," she said.

"They were running away … it was pretty scary."

She said the car then drove off before police caught up with him 10 minutes later.

Neighbour Jim Muller also saw the incident unfold.

"He [the victim] was standing in the carport and the car just hit him and he went down," he said.

"I just couldn't believe it. You don't think you're seeing it.

"It was a shock, there's always trouble over there but it's something you don't see everyday."
