Man airlifted to hospital after three-vehicle smash on M9

A man has been airlifted to hospital this morning after a crash on the M9.

Police, paramedics and fire crews were called to the M9 eastbound near the junction with the M876 north of Falkirk just after 7am following a smash between a van and two cars.

As a result the road is closed between junction six and eight, the M876 at junction seven leading to the motorway is also shut.

The male was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow following the collision. His condition is not known at this stage.

A 10-mile diversion has been put in place (Traffic Scotland)

Drivers are being asked by Police Scotland to avoid the area and find alternative routes with a 10-mile diversion put in place by Traffic Scotland.

A Police Scotland statement read: "Police Scotland are dealing with a road traffic collision on the M9 eastbound towards Edinburgh after the junction for M876.

"M9 eastbound between Junctions 6 and 8 CLOSED. Further closure M876 at junction 7 leading to M9. Drivers are asked to avoid the area meantime.

"A man has been taken by helimed to hospital. His condition is not known at this stage.
