Man airlifted to hospital after falling ill on a beach in Pembrokeshire

A man has been airlifted to hospital in Swansea after falling ill on a Welsh beach.

Coastguard and RNLI teams were called to Monsktone Beach in Pembrokeshire shortly before 6.30pm on Saturday.

Paramedics also attended to treat the man, but due to the condition of his health and the incoming tide the Coastguard’s rescue helicopter was called to the scene.

Once there rescue teams were able to transport him to hospital for further treatment.

A spokesman for HM Coastguard said: "We received a call at 6.22pm on Saturday alerting us to a man who had been taken ill on the beach at Monkstone.

"The Tenby Coastguard rescue team and Tenby RNLI's inshore lifeboat were paged to assist paramedics with the evacuation of the casualty.

"Upon arrival it was decided that due to the casualty’s condition, location and incoming tide that Coastguard rescue helicopter 187 would be required. Once the helicopter was on the scene, the casualty was placed on a stretcher and winched on board the helicopter."

The man, who is understood to be in his 70s, was flown from the beach - which sits between Tenby and Saundersfoot - to Morriston Hospital in Swansea.

His condition is not known.
