Man airlifted to hospital after fall while walking on coast near Weston-super-Mare

A walker had to be airlifted to hospital after taking a tumble on the coast near Weston-super-Mare.

The man was out on his daily exercise yesterday (Friday) afternoon when he fell and slipped at the end of Brean Down.

Weston Coastguard Rescue Team and BARB Search and Rescue were alerted and once on scene assessed the man who appeared to have a broken or dislocated his ankle.

He was wrapped in blankets to protect him from the wind.

Due to the inaccessible location for a road ambulance, the coastguard helicopter from St Athan in South Wales was scrambled.

The man was airlifted to Southmead Hospital for treatment.

A spokesman for Weston Coastguard Rescue Team said: “Because of the inaccessible location for an ambulance and the fact a carry-out was out of the question, the decision was made to utilise the Coastguard helicopter from St Athan, South Wales.

“They arrived in minutes, and with the casualty safely on board, flew him to Southmead Hospital for the necessary treatment.”

Anyone who spots someone in trouble along the coast should call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
