Man airlifted to hospital after collapsing at cross country event in Birtley

A man has been airlifted to hospital after collapsing at a cross country running event in Birtley.

The air ambulance was flown out to Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy at just after 10am on Sunday after the man fell unconscious on one of the school fields.

CPR was administered and a defibrillator was used before the patient was taken to Royal Victoria Infirmary.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 10.08am to reports of a person unconscious on the fields of Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy.

"We sent two ambulances, a specialist paramedic and we requested assistance from the Great North Air Ambulance.

"There was a doctor on scene. CPR and a defibrillator were in progress.

"The man has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary by air ambulance."

Video footage and pictures show the air ambulance taking off from one of the all weather pitches by the school.
