Man airlifted from Snowdonia with head injury after 50ft fall

A man 'scrambling' up rocks in Snowdonia has been airlifted to hospital after falling 50ft.

The 21-year-old is said to have suffered a head injury while out on Moel Siabod, a 2,800ft peak, reports North Wales Live.

It's reported he slipped and hit his head on the ground below at around 2.15pm on Saturday.

Mountain rescue crews and the coastguard helicopter were alerted to assist, before the man was flown to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor for treatment.

A spokesman for the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team said: "The young man had been scrambling up steep rock on the south ridge when a handhold broke off.

"His scrambling mate reckoned his friend fell about 10 to 15 metres, banging the back of his head on rocks when he hit the ground.

"He was conscious but immobile."

The Caernarfon-based coastguard helicopter crew attempted to immediately winch the man from the location, but were unable to do so.

The winchman was dropped nearby so he could begin caring for the man, while mountain rescue team members made their way to the scene.

The helicopter crew then managed to winch the man from close to the site, and he was taken to hospital for treatment.
