A man has admitted trying to stab a police officer to death in Essex.

John McCartney stabbed the man, who was at home with his wife and two children, 10 times in Rayleigh in April.

Basildon Crown Court heard that the 40-year-old launched the attack when the victim answered the door.

McCartney, who is currently being held at a secure psychiatric facility, admitted attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon on Monday via video link.

At a previous hearing, the court heard McCartney was believed to have known the Essex Police officer.

The officer, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, suffered six stab wounds to his chest, lacerations on his arm and abdomen - exposing his bowel – and wounds to his feet.

Essex Police said the officer, who received an award for “outstanding act” in October last year, was now recovering at home.

Chief Constable Ben Harrington paid tribute to the bravery of the wounded officer, saying: “I'm in no doubt that his heroism in tackling an armed man whilst critically injured protected the community, protected his family, and Essex is safer as a result.”

“I say thank you to the emergency services, to his neighbours, to the community and the doctors, medics and paramedics who undoubtedly saved his life.”

The officer is still recovering from his injuries, but Mr Harrington said he hoped “a man of his bravery” would be able to continue to serve with Essex Police.

Judge Samantha Leigh adjourned sentencing until 6 March to allow time for psychologists to come to court and give evidence about McCartney’s mental state.
