Man admits setting fire to property in Bridgend on New Year's Day and intending to put lives at risk

A 20-year-old man has admitted setting fire to a property in Bridgend on New Year’s Day, intending to endanger the lives of those inside.

Ethan Hopkins, from Heol Fach in North Cornelly, denied two counts of attempted murder but pleaded guilty to arson with intent to endanger life.

During a plea and trial preparation hearing at Cardiff Crown Court prosecutor Clare Wilks said his plea was acceptable to the Crown.

She said prosecutors reviewed the fire investigator’s report and further photographs of the damage. The charges relate to an incident at Mill Meadow in North Cornelly on January 1.

Paul Hobson, for Hopkins, said a psychiatrist found the defendant to be fit to plead.

Judge Paul Thomas QC, who appeared via video link from Swansea Crown Court, ordered a pre-sentence report.

The defendant’s June trial date was cancelled. Hopkins was remanded in custody until he is sentenced on March 13.
