Man admits raping woman in Cardiff's Bute Park

A teenager has pleaded guilty to raping a woman following a sexual assault in a Cardiff park.

Tyler Higgins, now 20, was 19 years old when he was arrested on suspicion of rape following an attack at Bute Park on July 15.

Police cordoned off the park after receiving reports of the assault, which occurred in the early hours of the morning.

The cordon was in place in opposite the Pettigrew Tea Room at the Castle West Lodge entrance to the park in Castle Street.

Appearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday the defendant, also known as Zack Higgins, appeared via videolink and entered guilty pleas to two counts of rape in respect of one victim.

Defence barrister Hashim Salmman asked for sentencing to be adjourned so a pre-sentence report could be carried out.

Addressing the defendant Judge Richard Twomlow said: "You have pleaded guilty to two very serious offences and it is inevitable you will receive a lengthy custodial sentence.

"Because of your young age and lack of previous convictions, and to consider whether you qualify as a dangerous offender, I am ordering a pre-sentence report. You must register as a sex offender and comply with the notification requirements from today."

Higgins, of Brithdir Street, Cathays, was remanded in custody until sentencing on September 2.
