Man admits knife attack on police officers but has attempted murder charge dropped

A man has admitted attacking police officers with a knife, although attempted murder charges against him have been dropped.

Thomas McComish had been accused of trying to kill a Merseyside Police officer during an incident on Parr Mount Street in St Helens. Gerald Baxter, prosecuting, told Liverpool Crown Court this afternoon, Tuesday, that the 34-year-old was armed with a knife and a bottle at the time of the attack shortly before 9.30pm on December 5 last year.

The force stated at the time that PCs had carried out a search of the area and found him near to the Mount Church on Traverse Street, but he responded "aggressively". McComish, of Morgan Street, was disarmed after a struggle - during which one officer suffered a minor injury.

Having previously been charged with attempted murder, he today pleaded guilty to two counts of the lesser offence of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent while appearing via video link to HMP Altcourse. The defendant also admitted possession of a bladed article in a public place and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Christopher Stables, defending, told the court his client has "little in the way of previous convictions" - with six offences of making indecent images, drunk and disorderly behaviour, possession of cannabis and travelling on a train without a ticket on his record. He added: "Plainly, this is an extremely serious matter and the defendant understands it will be met with only one type of sentence."

McComish will be sentenced next month. Remanding him into custody until this date, the Honorary Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC said: "It is inevitable there will be a prison sentence for these matters."
