Man admits killing university worker from Crosby in Birmingham knife attack

A man has today admitted killing a Crosby university worker in a devastating knife attack.

Zephaniah McLeod pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Jacob Billington, 23, in Birmingham.

The 27-year-old admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

But he faces trial for murder and a date was set for the end of June.

This afternoon, the names of all those who McLeod is accused of attempting to murder were read out in court.

They are Dimitar Bachvarov, Migle Dolobauskaite, Thomas Glassey, Michael Callaghan, Shane Rowley, Rhys Cummings and Ryan Bowers.

Mr Callaghan, also from Crosby, was friends with drummer Mr Billington. The pair were bandmates, having become friends at school.

Mr Callaghan, also 23, suffered serious injuries and had to be transferred to Liverpool to undergo rehabilitation at a "specialist neurological hospital."

Today, McLeod, 27, of Nately Grove, Selly Oak, appeared in court wearing a grey top.

As well as his manslaughter plea, McLeod also faces seven charges of attempted murder but did not enter pleas to those charges.

Judge Melbourne Inman QC adjourned the case until April 30 for a pre-trial review.

Eight people were stabbed in the early hours of September 6 last year in different parts of the city over the space of 90 minutes.

Mr Billington, a Sheffield Hallam graduate, died from a wound to the neck, a post-mortem examination revealed

He had been in the city with friends to celebrate with one of their number who was studying in Birmingham.

Michael and Jacob had been friends throughout their schooldays at Great Crosby Primary School and Sacred Heart Catholic College.

They then attended university together in Sheffield and formed a band, The Vedetts, with other friends, with Michael the lead singer and guitarist, and Jacob the drummer.

Jacob had been working at Sheffield Hallam University while Michael, an engineering graduate, had recently started a job with the NHS on Merseyside.
