Man admits drink driving and assault over incident at Filwood

A man is facing a possible prison sentence after admitting a series of charges connected to .

John McDonagh pleaded guilty to five charges at Bristol Magistrates Court on Monday, and has now been committed to Bristol Crown Court to be sentenced next month.

The 35-year-old faced one charge of drink driving - that he drove a white panel van on Barnstaple Road in Knowle West on February 1 while over the drink drive limit.

McDonagh blew 57mcgs of alcohol in 100ml of breath when breathalysed - the legal limit is 35mcgs.

McDonagh, of Hartcliffe Road, Knowle West, also pleaded guilty to three other driving offences - that he drove while disqualified, with no valid insurance and that he drove dangerously on Barnstaple Road.

He pleaded guilty to all of those three other driving offences, and also pleaded guilty to a charge that he assaulted a woman occasioning her actual bodily harm on the same date.

Magistrates heard that the charges related to an incident near the Filwood Community Centre on Saturday evening at around 11pm.

Police said on Sunday that they were called to Filwood Broadway then and arrested McDonagh nearby at 11.10pm.

At the time, a police spokesperson said: “A number of people received injuries not believed life-changing or life-threatening and several cars were damaged in the incident.”

McDonagh will appear at Bristol Crown Court on March 4 for his sentencing process to be continued before a judge.
